FAQs
Are you insured?
We are fully insured for fencing and landscaping work
How high can my new fence be?
Fence heights are a matter of planning policy. Generally, your rear garden fences are allowed to be up to two metres high but your local authority planning office will be able to confirm this. Do always discuss any plans you have with any neighbours who may be affected.
Can I put trellis on top of a 2 metre high boundary fence?
If you have a two metre fence you will not be able to add any trellis on top without getting planning permission. You can put up a fence and trellis with a combined height of two metres.
Can I work out ownership of my boundary fence by looking?
Unfortunately you need to forget anything you’ve been told about “left-hand” or “right-hand” rules – they don’t exist. Looking can give you a clue: walls and fences are most likely to have been built on the land that belongs to the boundary’s owner with the further edge of the wall marking the actual boundary.
You can often guess who owns a fence by looking at which side the arris rails are, the builders or property owners might have put the fence up facing away from their own property so their neighbour gets the ‘good’ side. This should be repeated with the neighbour on the other side so each home has one ‘bad’ and one ‘good’ side. However, Whoever is paying for the fence can put it up either way of their choosing.
Should I choose dip treated or pressure treated timber?
The main advantage of dip treated timber is its lower cost, and its ‘instantly stained’ appearance.
Pressure treated timber is slightly more expensive. In addition the uncoloured finish is preferred by many, providing a blank slate for your own choice of treatment.
Do you use timber or concrete posts?
We use both. We will discuss your preferences but also make recommendations based on the site situation.
